Parent FAQs
“My student calls me multiple times per day and is extremely homesick. Should I pull him/her out of the university?”
This is a matter between the parent/guardian and the student. However, many students experience being homesick upon first arriving at the university. The University Counseling Center (662-915-3784) provides free services for students and is a great resource for students experiencing anxiety, depression, etc. If you would like a staff member in the Office of the Dean of Students to follow up with your student, please fill out a Student of Concern form describing the situation.
“My son or daughter needs to come home due to an emergency. How does he/she make up assignments?”
The student will need to contact his or her instructors, letting them know of the emergency. If the student is unable to contact the instructors, please call the Office of the Dean of Students so they can send an Absence from Class Notification to the student’s instructors.
“My son or daughter is extremely sick and has been hospitalized. Who do I talk to about his/her course standing?”
The best option would be to try to get into contact with the student’s instructors. Filling out a Student of Concern form would be the next best option. Your student’s case will be assigned to a staff member, who will then contact the student’s instructors. This staff member will also be able to answer further questions as well.
“My son or daughter keeps talking about a professor who is acting strange in class. Is there anything you can do about that?”
If the student feels there is an immediate concern for the safety of the professor or others, call UPD (662-915-4911) or dial 911. If safety is not an immediate concern, fill out a Person of Concern form (HERE) describing the professor’s behavior.
“My son or daughter is failing his/her classes. Who do I talk to about that?”
This issue would be between the student and the instructor. Encourage your student to communicate with their instructor to see what their options are. The instructor may have tutoring suggestions or additional assignments the student could complete. If you would like a staff member to follow up with your student, please fill out the Student of Concern form describing the situation.
“My son or daughter sounds so depressed and angry on the phone. Can someone there help him/her?”
The University Counseling Center is a free and available option for students; let your student know about this resource. You may also want to fill out a Student of Concern form for the student, so that a staff member can follow up with him or her and continue to encourage the use of the University Counseling Center.
